Stop Schnauzer Jumping

Schnauzers love people – that’s a fact. However, sometimes they love people so much that they just want to jump all over them in excitement. Today you can learn how to stop your Schnauzer jumping!

Does your Schnauzer like to jump all over you and your guests? There are a number of reasons why this behaviour is not okay:

  • Although Miniature Schnauzers don’t cause too much damage when they jump, it’s a different story with the Giant Schnauzer. What if your Giant Schnauzer jumped on an older person or young child? Now that would be a different story. However, whatever sized Schnauzer you own, you should really learn to stop your Schnauzer jumping.
  • Imagine your Schnauzer has just been to the local dog park and run through the mud and leaves. Do you really want those dirty paws jumping all over you and your guests? Again yet another reason to stop your Schnauzer jumping.

The best way to stop your Schnauzer from jumping is by teaching them to do something completely different. And that something different is making your Schnauzer sit instead. There are a number of steps to this:

  1. The best way to teach your Schnauzer to sit is with treats such as a small doggie biscuit. Hold this treat above your Schnauzers nose and move it slowly up and backwards until they are sitting. While doing this make sure you say the word “sit”. Once they are sitting reward your Schnauzer with the doggie biscuit. It’s also good to praise your Schnauzer and give them lots of cuddles. Repeat this process until your Schnauzer sits with just the one word command.
  2. Once your Schnauzer has mastered sitting on your command, it’s time to teach them to sit for your guests. This is similar to the previous step. Ask a family member or guest to knock on your front door with the doggie biscuits. On their arrival your Schnauzer may look like they are going to jump on them. When your Schnauzer is just about to leap up ask your guest or family member to say “sit”. If your Schnauzer sits then they should be rewarded with a treat. You should repeat this step a number of times. Overtime your Schnauzer will learn to sit down when someone comes to your door, instead of jumping all over them.
  3. The third step is teaching your Schnauzer to sit when they come across people on your walks instead of jumping all over them. For this step you will need to enlist a friend to come across you and your Schnauzer when out on your walk. Make sure this friend has a few doggies treats on hand. When your Schnauzer is just about to jump command them to “sit”. Once they are sitting reward your Schnauzer with the treat. In the future your Schnauzer should sit when they come across the public on your walks.

If you follow these steps, then your Schnauzer should sit instead of jumping all over you and your guests. But don’t be surprised if your Schnauzer sits just for the fun of it thinking they will get a treat!

Jumping may mean your Schnauzer is affectionate, but it can also be annoying and even dangerous for small children and the elderly. So take the steps above and stop your Schnauzer jumping today!
