  • Patience is the most important thing when learning how to train a Schnauzer.  You need to realize that your Schnauzer will not learn everything straight away and that it will take time.  So persevere – your patience will be well worth it in the end!
  • One of the most important aspects of training is establishing your alpha leadership role.  Basically this means showing your Schnauzer that you are the leader of your family (or pack in dog terms).  If your Schnauzer sees you as the alpha leader then they will be more likely to listen to you during the training process.  There are a few ways you can establish your alpha leadership role.  One way being always eating your food before your Schnauzer and secondly always walking through a doorway prior to your Schnauzer.
  • A great tip when learning how to train your Schnauzer is to start with the basics.  If you start with something too difficult then your Schnauzer may lose interest.  The simplest thing you can begin with is the basic commands such as ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘stay’.  It’s important to repeat these commands over and over again.  The more you repeat, the better your Schnauzer will understand them.  Once your Schnauzer has mastered these basic commands you can move on to more complicated training.
  • When learning how to train your Schnauzer, you will quickly see that rewards are a great encouragement tool.  The best rewards to use are positive affirmations and cuddles.  However, a little treat can be used as well.  It’s also important to note that you should never use physical punishment or yell at your Schnauzer if they do something incorrectly. This will just make your Schnauzer anxious and in turn will prolong the training process.
  • Consistency is key when learning how to train your Schnauzer.  For example if you set a rule where your Schnauzer is not allowed in the bedroom, then never, ever allow them in the bedroom – not even as a special treat.  This also means sticking to your chosen commands.  If you start with “sit” do not change it to “sit down now” at a later stage.  Inconsistency will just confuse your Schnauzer and will make the training process much harder.  So remember – consistency is key!
  • Another great tip when learning how to train your Schnauzer is to limit all distractions.  This means removing any toys or other pets that may distract your Schnauzer while you’re training them.  By limiting distractions your Schnauzer will be more likely to focus on what you’re teaching.
  • The best advice of all – HAVE FUN!  Training should not be a chore.  It should be a fun time for both you and your Schnauzer.

If you follow the above training tips you should end up with an obedient Schnauzer who will become a well-loved member of your family.   So start training your Schnauzer today!
