The following are some fantastic tips on how to crate train your Schnauzer:

Start Early

It’s best to introduce your Schnauzer to their crate right from the puppy stage.  This will allow your Schnauzer to get used to their new crate at a much fast rate.

Have Rules

When learning how to crate your Schnauzer it’s really important to have set rules.  One such rule is not allowing your Schnauzer on your bed or sofa.  If you allow this then it will be much harder to crate train your Schnauzer.

Where to House the Crate

It’s a good idea to have your Schnauzer’s crate in an area where there is lots of foot traffic such as in your lounge or kitchen.  This will allow your Schnauzer to feel safe and secure and part of the family.  In the early stages of Schnauzer crate training (such as when your Schnauzer is a puppy) it’s a good idea to move the crate into your bedroom when you go to bed.  This will make your Schnauzer puppy feel safe through the night.  However, after time you will be able to leave your Schnauzer’s crate in the one place and you will not need to move it into your bedroom overnight.

The Inside of the Crate

One of the important aspects of learning how to crate train your Schnauzer is deciding what to put inside the crate.  The best tip we can offer is to make the inside of the crate as comfy and inviting as possible for your Schnauzer.  For example make sure you choose a nice mattress and blanket to go inside the crate.  Adding some of their favorite toys is also a good idea.

Size of the Crate

It’s important that you don’t get a crate that is too big for your Schnauzer.  If you do this then your Schnauzer may go to the toilet inside.  To prevent this you need to get a crate that is just large enough for your Schnauzer to turn around comfortably inside but not so big that they can wander around.

Whining

You may notice when learning how to crate train your Schnauzer, that in the beginning they may whine while inside the crate.  If this occurs, it is important that you do not take your Schnauzer out of the crate.  Instead wait until your Schnauzer has been quite for at least five minutes.  After these five minutes are up take your Schnauzer out of the crate and reward them with a small treat or lots of cuddles.  Your Schnauzer will soon associate that being quite inside the crate means rewards and they will be less likely to whine in the future.

Time Limits

When first learning how to crate train your Schnauzer, it’s important you only leave them in the crate for a short period of time such as a few hours.  The older your Schnauzer gets, the longer you can keep them in the crate.  When you feel comfortable you can lave your Schnauzer in the crate for a full night.

As you can see from the above, learning how to crate train your Schnauzer is not hard, but it does require patience.  As a bonus, your Schnauzer will greatly appreciate this safe haven you have given them.  It will be a special place that they can call their very own.  So start crate training your Schnauzer today!
