Are you worried about you Schnauzer leaving hair all over your furniture and clothes?  Well, read on below to find out if Schnauzers really do shed.

Types of Schnauzers

Firstly, there are three types of Schnauzers.  Depending on which type of Schnauzer you own, they all shed slightly differently.  The three Schnauzer types are:

  • Miniature Schnauzers
  • Standard Schnauzers
  • Giant Schnauzers

Below you will find your answer to ‘do Schnauzers shed’ in relation to each of the different type of Schnauzer listed above.

Do Miniature Schnauzers shed?

You will be happy to learn that Miniature Schnauzers shed very, very little.  Their outer coat is quite wiry, however their undercoat is lovely, soft and fluffy.  Although, the Miniature Schnauzer does not shed a huge amount, they do still need to be groomed quite often to keep their coat in good shape.  Ideally, you should brush your Miniature Schnauzers coat two times a week, as this will help stop knotting.  Every six to eight weeks you should also take your Miniature Schnauzer to a professional groomer to be clipped and trimmed.  Not only will this keep your Miniature Schnauzer looking sharp, but it will also help keep your pet soft.  Grooming may also lighten your Miniatures Schnauzers coat and will keep it nice and shiny.

Do Standard Schnauzers shed?

The coat of the Standard Schnauzer is very similar to the smaller Miniature Schnauzers coat – wiry on the outside with a soft and fluffy undercoat.  As with the Miniature Schnauzer, the Standard Schnauzer does not shed very much at all.  They will however need to be groomed on a regular basis just like their counterpart the Miniature Schnauzer.  If you are looking for dog that’s not too big, and not too small that doesn’t shed too much, then the Standard Schnauzer may be the perfect dog for you.

Do Giant Schnauzer shed?

The Giant Schnauzer has a very similar coat as their counterparts the Miniature Schnauzer and Standard Schnauzer.  Although the Giant Schnauzer has the same coat as the Miniature and Standard Schnauzers, they do shed considerably more due to their larger size.  Although Giant Schnauzers do shed you do need to realize that they do not shed nearly as much as other breeds of dogs such as Retrievers or Collies.  You will also be happy to learn that you can help prevent the amount of hair that your Giant Schnauzer does shed by taking preventative measures.  The best way to do this is with regular grooming by a professional groomer – every six to eight weeks would be a great routine to keep to.  You will also need to brush your Giant Schnauzers coat at home at least two times a week.  However, it’s important to note that even with regular grooming you probably will still notice some hair left on your carpet and clothes by your Giant Schnauzer.

So there you go – answers to the all-important question: ‘do Schnauzers shed’.  So as you’ve learned above, depending on what size Schnauzer you wish to own, you’ll be happy to learn that they shed very little.
